Clean Up Your Skin!

Let's talk about skin. When making the switch to clean beauty, my approach is first swap out what is covering the most skin. Your skin is your largest organ, and over 60% of what you put on it absorbs into it, aka can hit your blood stream - so no bad chemicals allowed. My first rec, or plea, is a clean body lotion and body wash, because those cover the majority of your body. I love Dr. Bronners body wash ($12) and Alba Very Emollient body lotion ($10, with no fragrance), seen below.

Next, I think an everyday face foundation is most important. My approach with clean beauty is 80/20, meaning you can keep a few ‘unclean’ products on your shelf or use ‘unclean’ products now and then. So, if you have a favorite foundation you can't fathom life without, keep it! Use it on date nights and weekend parties. My tactic has been to use a clean primer and tinted moisturizer during the work week, and when occasion calls, use my 'unclean' faves.

Try and find your perfect every day tinted moisturizer/primer duo for the work week (or most days of it).

I’ll name drop just this once (because it's a highlight of this beauty junkie's life), I was actually recommended my skin duo by none other than the fabulous Jean Godfrey-June, Beauty Director at Goop, while at a Goop event at the NYC Bond Street store. I would purchase pretty much anything Jean even pointed at (and kind of do, her Ask Jean article is my go-to). She recommended, and I now absolutely love, the Dew Skin by Beauty Counter with the wise advice that #2 works on pretty much everyone. This tinted moisturizer gives you the "your skin but better" look and contains a clean SPF 20. Be warned it's on the sheer side, so if you are looking for more coverage I'd try their Tint Skin or another brand. Here’s the link to Jean’s article on Dew Skin, if this doesn’t convince you to give it a try, I’m not sure what will.

Jean then began to recommend the Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Illuminating Primer, she uttered the magical words “GP” and “uses” in the same sentence, and for the second time that night, it was in my hands before she could finish the sentence. This primer is so light and airy, unlike anything I've tried before, and with a subtle glow that lights up your face, very naturally. I'll wear just the primer to run errands after workouts, or, if I'm trying to pull off the no makeup look...with makeup.

I know that making a change to your skin routine is a big shift, but once you find the perfect fit I'm confident you'll feel so much better about your daily look. And well, let’s just have Jean take it away to motivate you to give clean makeup a try:

“So: Like finding the perfect-fitting pair of jeans, make room for a certain amount of trial and error, and remember that even when you find the perfect pair, sometimes, a month later, you’re like, “why did I think these were so perfect?!”"
