New year, new you, right? Give yourself a resolution you can (refreshingly) achieve by slowly swapping to clean beauty. Here are my tips on how to transition to clean beauty in 2020, that I used in 2019 to successfully transition to clean beauty. Then, take a look at the 5 easiest clean swaps you can make to start your clean beauty journey.

Tip 1: Buy When You Need

You don’t have to throw out your entire makeup and skincare routine and start from zero. Instead, make swaps when you run out of something. This will ease the burden of spending on new products and let you find brands and products you love over time.

Tip 2: The 80/20 Rule

Just like the diet, I think aiming for about 80% of your products to be clean (over the course of however many months you think is possible) is more manageable and less intimidating than everything. There are some products that are too hard to let go of because they just work so well for you, or save just for weekend looks, but trying to get majority clean is, in my opinion, a great way to start.

Tip 3: Learn!

You will be more likely to switch, and keep up with it, if you learn why traditional beauty products can be harmful. Listen to the Goop Beauty Closet podcast, Breaking Beauty, and more (just google search and see what you like!). Additionally, I highly recommend the Goop Clean Beauty book (plus it makes a great coffee table book or gift). The easy but science driven read will walk through how sleep, nutrition, exercise, and finally our products all play a role in how we look & feel.

5 Easy Swaps to Make ASAP

1. Body Wash

When making the switch to clean beauty, my approach is first swap out what is covering the most skin. Your skin is your largest organ, and over 60% of what you put on it absorbs into it, aka can hit your bloodstream - so no bad chemicals allowed. My first rec, or plea, is a clean body lotion and body wash, because those cover the majority of your body. I love Dr. Bronners body wash, buy at Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or Amazon for $12-20 depending on size. I love the Eucalyptus and Mint scents.

2. Body Lotion

See above for why. This one from Alba Organics comes in a huge tube, an easy-to-use pump, and hydrates well. Buy for $9-13 at Whole Foods, Target for Amazon.

3. Self Tanner

Think about self tanner. It sits, and sits, and sits, for 3-5 days on your skin. And likely gets steadily absorbed into your bloodstream over that course of time. Make a clean swap with the Vita Liberata foaming mousse, it’s glowing perfection. The tan is natural and there is zero transfer to sheets or fragrance. Buy at Goop or Nordstrom.

4. Moisturizer

This Follain moisturizer won’t break the bank at $32, but is a clean, good alternative that I think would work great for normal, combo, oily and sensitive skin. It contains ingredients such as peptides, bakuchiol, and rose hip oil to plump up and hydrate the skin. I’ve used for about two months and love it, plus, that price is amazing!

5. All-in-one Mask

The Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask will fix pretty much any skin problem you have. It cleared up my skin, shrinks pores, and adds an insane glow (except for hydration, sad). Start here to see the power of natural beauty. Buy at Credo Beauty, Goop, Sephora and more.

I am an affiliate at Follain and Credo and may receive commission if you make a purchase - at absolutely no cost to you of course!
